Starting a YouTube channel for vlogs can be a great idea, especially if you’re passionate about a particular subject or niche and you have a lot of ideas for interesting YouTube videos that others will enjoy watching.
As you start the process, though, there are a few things that you really should keep in mind. Before you write your first script or turn the camera on to film your first YouTube video, answer these six questions for yourself.
Do You Have a Passion for Your YouTube Channel Topics?
If you’re starting a YouTube channel only because it seems like the popular thing to do or because you think that there’s a big demand for a certain kind of video, think again. The most popular and successful vloggers on YouTube have one thing in common. They all started their channels because they were passionate about their vlog topics and/or niches.
If you aren’t really excited by the vlogging topic(s) or area that you’ve chosen, take a moment to think about what does excite you and if you can turn that into the basis for a YouTube vlog channel. No matter how popular your original idea for your YouTube channel is right now, you can count on a lot more success if you go with one that you’re really enthusiastic about.
Do You Enjoy Vlogging?
This might sound like a silly question, but you might be surprised how many people start vlog channels, only to find out that they really don’t actually like vlogging at all. However, unless you actively dislike everything about vlogging, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you shouldn’t start a YouTube channel.
Take some time to think about which aspects of vlogging you like and dislike. Do you love writing scripts, shooting footage, and editing, but hate being in front of the camera? If you can find someone who’s less camera-shy to collaborate with, you’ll be in business. Do you love coming up with ideas for videos and shooting them, but you just can’t stand the editing process? There are thousands of people out there who love editing and will be happy to work for you at reasonable rates.
Do You Like Engaging With Viewers?
Vlogging isn’t just about uploading videos to YouTube for other people to watch. Your viewers want to interact with you. They want to feel involved, and they want to be a part of a community. The more you engage with them and the more you foster that community feeling, the more successful you’ll be.
Will You Be Consistent on YouTube?
Consistency is just as key as engagement. Are you prepared to set a schedule for your vlogs and put videos out on time and on a regular basis? Having a consistent schedule lets your audience know when to tune in and when to expect new videos. This is essential for long term growth and success!
Is Your Brand Name Unique?
If you’ve answered the first four questions, and you’re ready to keep going, it’s time to talk a little bit more specifically about branding and marketing. Do you have a brand name for your YouTube channel, and is it unique and memorable?
You want your vlogging brand name to reflect your YouTube videos and your brand voice, and you want it to be unique enough that you’ll be able to use it across social media platforms and so that fans searching for you will be able to find you based on a Google search for your brand name.
Do You Have a Marketing Plan As You Start Vlogging?
Finally, you could put out the highest quality, most interesting and entertaining videos on earth, but without a marketing plan, who’s going to see them? Overnight viral discoveries do happen, but you can’t plan on them. That’s like planning to win the lottery.
If you have a plan to create presences across all of the relevant social media platforms and to consistently post to them and to your YouTube Channel, you have a good start to a marketing plan. The more detailed you get and the more you outline your specific goals and milestones, the more success you’ll achieve with your YouTube channel and vlogs.
If you have satisfactory answers to all six of these questions, then you’re ready to get started on your YouTube channel right now. Don’t worry if you’re still figuring it out, though. These considerations will help you get started and really figure out which direction you want to take.
