As you get further and further into vlogging and video creation, you’ll find that a good digital camera can go a long way toward making your YouTube videos look and sound much more professional. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money just to find a great digital camera for vlogging. Check out these basic tips to find a good vlogging camera for your YouTube channel.
High Definition Video Recording
It’s been five years since YouTube first rolled out its high-definition capabilities at 1080p. Since then HD has taken over YouTube, and people have been watching YouTube videos on their HD TVs, as well as their laptops, tablets, and smartphones. If you want to keep up with your audience, you absolutely must make sure that your vlogging camera has HD recording capabilities.
Built-In, High Quality Microphone
And audio is just as important as video quality, so you’ll also want to make sure that your vlogging camera has a built-in, high-quality microphone. A directed microphone that can filter out a lot of background noise is good, and an input for an external microphone is even better.
Sometimes you just won’t be able to get the best audio if you don’t have an external microphone, but that purchase can wait until later for a lot of YouTubers. If your camera has external microphone capabilities, then you’ll have that option available to you whenever you decide to get a microphone and use it.
A wide-angle lens allows you to take video formatted for a widescreen. This is important for a couple of reasons. Most TVs are built for widescreen viewing these days, and many viewers use their TVs as monitors when they’re watching YouTube videos. It’s also important because widescreen formatting is far preferable and more professional looking than the old pan-and-scan narrow ratio. Everything looks better through a wide-angle lens.
Good Optical Zoom
A digital camera with great optical zoom shows you where you’ll focus your shot in your viewfinder. You’ll typically be able to use the zoom focus and see the results immediately so you know how each shot will look before you even start filming your vlogs.
It’s also important to check the range, as well. You definitely do not want grainy and blurry footage when zooming into other subjects from a distance. Optical zoom is an incredibly useful tool, whether you’re filming yourself or you’re taking footage of others.
Camera Size and Weight
Once you find a vlogging camera in your price range that has all of the features you like, then you’ll want to go over its size and weight. If you do a lot of your filming on the move or you have to walk around with your vlogging camera a lot, you’ll need one that is small enough to fit in a pocket or bag and light enough that it won’t be a burden as you carry it around while vlogging.
You might be surprised at just how affordable a high-definition camera that fits in your pocket like a Canon Powershot (popular camera choice) can be. Make sure that you get one that fulfills all of your needs, though. No matter how conveniently sized a camera is, it isn’t worth much to you if it doesn’t take quality footage.
Read the Camera Reviews
Finally, before you settle on any particular camera for vlogging, make sure that you read the reviews. If you see just one or two bad reviews, you probably have nothing to worry about. However, if you see a whole string of negative reviews, you’ll want to steer clear. The best cameras might have a couple of unhappy customers, but they’ll also have dozens (if not hundreds) of good reviews to counterbalance a couple of people’s bad experiences.
Keep these basic features and tips in mind as you search for a good vlogging camera for your YouTube channel.
