Let’s be honest, one of the many reasons we love YouTube is because of the easy access to viewing whichever type of content we prefer, without having to face lengthy commercial delays in between (..like Television).
The fact that YouTube gives us the option to skip a video advertisement after 5 seconds is a great thing for both viewers and advertisers. First, viewers have the option to skip an advertisement if they’re not interested and are able to immediately move on to the content, or they can watch it completely if the message appeals to them.
For advertisers using the same skippable ad format to promote their brand on YouTube, it ensures them that they’re budget is being spent on viewers actually interested in what they have to say, and not watching because they have no other choice.
By “no other choice”, we’re referring to unskippable ads, and more specifically the 30 second unskippable ad format. Now, obviously we shouldn’t be over-exaggerating about a 30 second advertisement, but things can definitely add up when you’re consistently coming across them every time you load the next video.
Well, that won’t be the case for much longer! According to multiple reports, YouTube will stop showing 30 second unskippable ads in 2018:
We’ve decided to stop supporting 30-second unskippable ads as of 2018 and focus instead on formats that work well for both users and advertisers – Google spokesperson told BBC.
So, starting next year, you won’t have to sit through 30 seconds of promotional messages that you’re not interested in. Advertising is a big part of YouTube because the revenue generated is crucial to creating more opportunity for the community of creators today and in the future, but in our opinion, we agree that this move will eventually work great for both users and advertising brands.
