We’re not always a huge fan of change, and particularly where our favourite technologies are concerned. So, if you are a YouTube creator, or thinking of making YouTube videos, you may have been surprised by their announcement about ten days ago, in regards to a redesign currently underway.
Essentially, their announcement let the world of YouTube know that many users were being given a chance to offer feedback about the new look and feel of the site they were creating. Explaining they were using “Material Design”, which is a “unified system that combines theory, resources, and tools for crafting digital experiences”, they went on to explain a bit farther.
Wondering what material design is? You can learn more about it here.
The new design is meant to be simple, consistent and beautiful. Emphasizing clean and fresh layout, this new take on YouTube is focused on being less distracting, busy and confusing. Aligned across all of the YouTube platforms, including mobile apps, it is meant to provide individual users with a familiar experience at all times.
They also talked about beauty and their goal of combining it with “purpose” for better experiences. For example, they cited the “Dark Theme” feature that reduces glare and improves the experience of color in any YouTube video.
This new approach to YouTube uses a faster framework known as Polymer and allows developers to enjoy greater ease and speed when rolling out new features for us like the “Dark Theme”. Anyone can opt in to preview the new theme design (using this link). Feedback is encouraged and no permanent changes have been made just yet.
