Most vloggers on YouTube started off as viewers. In fact, it’s very likely that most YouTube vloggers have a long list of channels in their niche that they either used to watch, or still do. And with the strong drive towards building communities on YouTube, it’s almost impossible for vloggers to not know at least a few other channels in their niche.
But this leads to one thing that could be a problem: comparison. As creators on YouTube, vlogging drives you to reach more viewers, create more and better content, and to keep growing.
There is a quote that says that comparison is the thief of joy, and nothing is truer. New vloggers can sometimes start to wonder why others get more views, more comments, more subscribers, or more video likes. Is it their camera angles? Their jokes? Their sound quality? And they can quickly begin picking apart all the things that make their videos unique.
You’ll only be thinking about what you wish you did better, rather than having fun creating great content. And once that happens, your YouTube channel will lose that special something that makes it yours.
The biggest problem is that no one can ever know what goes on behind the camera lens. Comparing yourself to what you see on YouTube is like comparing apples and an apple pie. Yes, the components are similar – but you have no idea what it took to make that pie, what other ingredients may be involved, and how many times the pie failed before that creator got it right.
You also don’t know their journey. It could be that they’ve spent decades longer than you building their audience in other formats. No one can expect huge growth at the very beginning.
Comparing yourself doesn’t actually help you accomplish your goals as a vlogger on YouTube. If you want to create vlog content that you’re proud of, the best method is to create a series of smaller goals and milestones that you can work towards.
Then measure your own YouTube channel’s progress every month, only comparing yourself against your previous work and results. Are you improving and progressing down the path you created for yourself? If yes, then you are doing just great!
