Are you ready to start a vlog channel on YouTube? Before you grab your vlogging camera and get to filming, you might want to consider a few things first. You want to ensure that your YouTube vlog channel has the proper planning and direction to be successful, right?
Well, if you ask yourself these four questions and take the time to really answer them, then you’ll have the information and direction you need to start vlogging on YouTube with a purpose.
What Will I Vlog About?
First of all, what are you going to create vlogs about? Choosing the right vlogging niche or topic area will give you a good idea of what you’ll need to do to come up with topics and how you’ll go about creating vlogs for your YouTube channel.
When you choose your niche, though, don’t just choose something that’s trending right now. Trends change daily, but your passions don’t. What topics are you truly passionate about? What do you spend your spare time online doing? If you found yourself in a library with a few hours to spare, which section would you gravitate towards?
Follow that passion and choose a vlogging niche that lets you spend your time learning about and discussing something that you really love.
Who Am I Making YouTube Videos For?
Once you’ve determined what you’re going to vlog about, take some time and identify your YouTube audience. Start thinking of as many details as you can about your ideal viewer. What’s their age group? What are their interests and hobbies? What kinds of vlog topics do they like? Where do they hang out on social media?
The more you can determine about your audience, the more you’ll be able to nail down your content persona and your brand voice. Once you have this set in stone, you’ll always know how to effectively communicate when talking to your audience, whether in your YouTube videos, on social media, in your blog, or even in person.
What Am I Trying To Do With My YouTube Channel?
Is this YouTube channel a hobby, or could it be a potential career?
Set out your short-term and long-term goals for your vlog channel. Write down where you want to be in two to three months, where you want to be in a year, and where you want to be in two or three years. Specifically, you can make goals for how many subscribers you want to have, how many views your YouTube videos should get per day/week/month, when you’ll monetize your channel, when you’ll open an online merchandise store, etc.
As you did with your audience, be as detailed as possible with your goals. The more detailed you are, the more easily you’ll be able to complete the next step as you consider starting your YouTube vlog channel.
What Steps Will I Reach My Goals?
Let’s say you want to get 1,000 subscribers on YouTube in the first two to three months. To get there, you will need to commit to setting a schedule for your vlogs and sticking to it. If you say that you’re going to upload YouTube videos every Wednesday afternoon, you need to do that. If you can only upload YouTube videos every other week to start out, that’s fine, but don’t over-commit and then fail to meet your deadlines.
Look at each goal individually. Break each one down into smaller goals and milestones. Then map out the steps you need to take to get to each one. For example, in addition to uploading vlogs regularly, to get more viewers, you will need to determine a plan for your marketing strategies and set up a schedule for it, as well.
Look at your map so far. How much time do you need to spend each week on each item for it? You might surprise yourself to find that building and maintaining a successful YouTube vlogging channel takes more time and effort than you first thought. You do need to be consistent, and you need to stay on top of your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks, but these can be broken down into smaller tasks to effectively manage your time on a daily basis.
With an idea of what you’ll vlog about, who your audience is, what your goals are, and how you’ll get to them, you should now have a good concept for your vlog channel and how to make it as successful as possible.
