No one likes feeling as if they’re speaking to a wall. Vloggers thrive on the commentary offered to them from their viewers, but before you can get those comments coming, you need to be able to fully engage your viewers and compel them to interact with your YouTube channel in the first place.
Having your viewers engaged is very important for success on YouTube.
If you’re looking to make your videos more engaging, then here are 6 ways on how you can begin to get your viewers to engage with your vlog channel:
1. Don’t be a Robot
Want to increase vlog engagement? Then be human. Be conversational and speak to your audience as if you’re really speaking to them. If you want to boost your engagement, simply vlog as if you were speaking to someone in a coffee shop.
2. Know What Your YouTube Viewers Want
If you’re vlogging about things that your viewers aren’t even interested in, then of course they won’t engage with it. You need to know what your current and potential subscribers want to watch if you expect to enjoy any level of quality interaction. Not sure what kind of videos your subscribers may want from you? Check out resources like:
- Comments on your vlogs
- Posts/comments on your competitor’s vlogs
- Social media comments, interests and “likes”
3. Be Yourself
People are coming to your YouTube channel because they want to know what you think about a given topic. They want to know about how it affects you, how it makes you feel, and what your take is. They aren’t stopping by to simply watch some reiteration of what someone from the New York Times thought, or get a run down on the facts. The whole point of a vlog is to share you thoughts, your point of view, and your problems, solutions, or issues with a topic.
4. Use Great Video Titles
The title of your vlog is like its entryway. If the titles on your videos aren’t engaging, then people are just going to walk right on by. If the titles captivate the interest of your target audience, however, then you’re going to have people walking through that door and stopping to see what you have to say. Your titles need to be:
The more you make your titles stand out, the more likely people are to be interested (especially when it comes to social media!). So do your research, but go beyond simply putting together a “list”-style vlog for every upload and get creative! Look at things like:
- Pop-culture trends
- Hot industry-related news stories
- Bizarre facts that you can somehow tie to yourself
5. Pose a Question to Your Audience
Want people to comment on your vlogs? Then ask them a question. Viewers feel far more compelled to leave an opinion if you actually ask them to participate and provide an opinion.
Side note: The responses that you receive from any question that you ask can provide you with some vlogging insight, and can be used for future vlogs. Make sure you record those comments in some way for future ideas.
6. Respond to Your YouTube Comments
All too many vloggers upload and upload and upload, and yet when it comes to the comments left by their viewers/subscribers, “mum’s” the word. If you want people to engage with your vlogs, then you have to engage with it too. Engagement isn’t a one-way street, so get on there and start replying to comments!
It can be hard to find a fine balance between “your voice” and keeping things respectful, but always respond in such a way that shows that you appreciate the other person’s opinion, and then provide a thoughtful reply that lays out why you do or don’t agree with their own opinion. If you get a conversation going, more viewers will feel inclined to join in, too.
Use these tips mentioned above to help make your vlogs and videos more engaging!
