As a YouTuber, when you think of reviews, you probably think about making YouTube videos to review products. However, these aren’t the only reviews that can be done on your YouTube channel.
In fact, each month you should perform a review of your channel to gauge its progress so that you can see what is working for you, what you need to improve, and how to tweak your plan for your channel to get more views, more subscribers, and more engagement.
The Benefits of Reviewing Your YouTube Analytics
There are a number of benefits involved with reviewing your YouTube channel’s progress. For one thing, on a day-to-day basis, you may not feel like your channel is gaining many subscribers or that your average views are seeing much progress.
However, if you take a step back to see where you are at the end of this month versus where you were at the end of last month or the month before that, you might be more satisfied at how far you’ve come. Just seeing this can be a huge motivator to keep going and to renew your efforts to keep improving your YouTube channel.
Of course, that’s not the only benefit of performing monthly channel reviews. You can also get a better idea of which video styles/formats are gaining the most popularity, which of your marketing strategies aren’t working as well as you think they should, and where you stand in terms of reaching your long- and short-term goals for your channel.
Gathering Your YouTube Channel’s Monthly Stats
To get the most out of your monthly YouTube channel review, you will want to visit your YouTube analytics page, and then select “overview” to see your:
- Total Views
- Total Watch Time
- Estimated Revenue (Income from ads plus YouTube Red)
- Top Ten Videos (Is there a similar style, theme, or format among them?)
- Audience Retention (Average View Duration)
- Traffic Sources (Also note which are your top sources, and which can be improved)
- Total Comments
- Likes and Dislikes
- Total Shares
- Net Subscribers (Total Subscribers Gained Minus Lost)
Again, all of this information can easily be retrieved by selecting “overview” from your YouTube analytics tab, or the different categories displayed below for a more in-depth look.
So, gather this information for all of your YouTube videos for the month by setting your statistical dates to show results from the previous month or last 30 days. Then, feel free to write down the information by hand, or by entering it into a spreadsheet type program.
When you do this, you’ll have all you need to create a review that will accurately depict your channel’s performance for the month.
Comparing Your Current Stats To Previous Stats
When you gather your statistical information about your YouTube channel, be consistent. Decide what you care most about and how you will record it. Then do the same thing each month. This will give you a clear picture of where you are succeeding and where you need work through consistent analytics.
Even if you have not done this before, though, you can begin comparing your current stats to previous stats. Just look at the analytics from previous months, note them, and then look at this month’s analytics.
As you make comparisons, look at where you’ve improved, and where you need to make things better. This will give you an idea of where you should focus your creative and marketing efforts for the next month.
Plan Goals and Milestones For Upcoming Months
As you compare previous months’ performance, see if you can find a pattern for your different YouTube analytics. For example, are you growing your total subscribers at 5% each month? Could more consistent efforts in specific areas lead to a greater growth rate? Based on your stats, come up with good goals and milestones to reach within the next month, the next six months, and the next year.
For example, if you want to get more comments and engagement on your YouTube videos, then you could set goals to end your videos with a question or call to action encouraging viewers to share their thoughts.
Similarly, if you want to get more of your YouTube videos shared online by viewers, then you could set goals to incorporate social media brands, contests, and relevant calls to action inviting viewers to get involved with your channel on social media.
Take a close look at your YouTube channel reviews to see what areas you want to strengthen, and then set goals/milestones accordingly.
Why Are Monthly YouTube Analytics Reviews Important?
Some might think that this sounds like a lot of work and that you could be spending this time creating YouTube videos or promoting them on social media. But how will you know which types of videos will perform the best and get you the most exposure? How will you see which days of the week have the best viewership? And how will you know what specifically needs to be emphasized to grow your YouTube channel?
Basically, attempting to plan the future of your YouTube channel without any information about its past performance is like trying to drive a car at night without headlights.
You could get lucky and point your channel in the right direction, but you’ll have no guidance to speak of. Thus, you can see just how important monthly reviews can be for your YouTube channel.
Monthly reviews can help keep you on track and show you where your weak points are. They can also give you that added boost of energy and motivation when you see just how far you’ve come in a month or a few months. Start collecting and using this data now and see how much it can help you grow your YouTube channel.
