Whether you’ve recently started a vlog channel on YouTube, you’ve been vlogging for a while, or you’re just beginning to think about vlogging, audience engagement should be your top priority. It honestly doesn’t matter if you already have a million fans or you’re working on getting your first hundred; you can benefit from these tips to make your YouTube videos more engaging.
Film Vlogs Like You’re Speaking to a Friend
To start, you want each of your YouTube vlogs to feel really personal to your viewers. You want to come across as a vlogger that’s approachable and empathetic. Remember, with a ton of content available online, viewers can probably get similar information you’re relating from any number of other sources. However, if they feel personally connected to you and your vlogs, they’ll be able to create a strong bond with your YouTube channel.
How can you foster this kind of feeling? For example, let’s say you use scripts to help plan and film your vlogs. When you’re scripting your YouTube videos and then when you start filming, pretend that you’re sitting down and talking with a friend. How would you teach one of your best friends to do a review of their smartphone? How would you review a new movie to them? When you think of it in these terms, your speech for your vlogs on YouTube will reflect that warm, friendly feeling and will help you get more viewers engaged.
Know Your Viewers’ Interests
Take some time before you plan your next vlog, and think about your audience. Who are they? What vlog topics are they interested in? What are their hobbies? The more specific you can get about them, the more YouTube ideas you’ll be able to brainstorm about topics that they’ll enjoy.
While you’re at it, if you’ve been vlogging for some time, take a look at your old YouTube videos. Note which ones were the most popular and consider how you can emulate those videos without going over the same topics again and again.
Get Your YouTube Channel’s Audience Involved
Of course, there’s no better way to know that you’re giving your audience what they want than to ask them. Getting your audience involved with your YouTube channel is a great way to get them more engaged with your vlogs.
For example, at the end of a YouTube video, you could sign off with something like, “I hope you found this [product] review helpful! Let me know your thoughts and questions about it in the comments. And if you have ideas for future topics you’d like to see in upcoming vlogs, leave those in the comments, too! Thanks for watching!”
If you don’t want to include all that in your outro, you can also include it in your video’s description, and you can post to your social media platforms asking for audience input, too. You can grow your audience interest and get great ideas for future vlogs by posting polls and asking what your viewers would like to see from you next on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or Google+.
Start a Discussion in Your Vlog’s Comments
After you upload a YouTube video, wait a couple of hours to see if your viewers get the conversation started on their own with questions and comments. Sometimes commenters may need a little bit of a push, though, so don’t be afraid to post a question of your own in the comments. This is also an effective way to direct the conversations taking place in the comments.
Ask Questions in Your YouTube Vlogs
Finally, be sure to ask your viewers questions in your vlogs. For example, you can ask them what they’d like to see you talk about next time, what their experiences have been with a particular product, how they’ve solved different challenges, and much more. When you do this, be sure to add a call to action like, “Tell us all about it in the comments!” so that they know this is a direct invitation to get involved and engaged with your YouTube vlogging channel’s community.
When you do these things, you’ll notice that your viewers will not only comment on your videos more, but that they’ll also share and like them more. With more engagement, you’ll start to get more views and subscribers on YouTube.
